Title: Reinventing a public open space: Piazza Umberto I, La Maddalena.

Abstact
The thesis deals with the design of public open spaces, with specific reference to the development of alternative scenarios for a portion of the waterfront in La Maddalena, the capital city of the homonymous archipelago of islands located in the north of Sardinia, in the province of Sassari (SS).
More precisely, the area under study includes Piazza Umberto I - once called "Piazza Comando", being the largest stronghold on the island - and a significant stretch of waterfront between Cala Gavetta and the historic port of Cala Mangiavolpe .
The project aims at the landscape and urban redevelopment of the city and its waterfront, to improve its overall quality with an intervention aimed at re-establishing a heterogeneous and fragmented set of public open spaces.
By adopting materials and methods typical of landscape architecture, the design proposal aims to increase the flora component, through the insertion of new plant structures, to reconfigure a sequence of coastal urban landscape, to favor the walkability and the active use of the landscape, historical and architectural heritage by creating thematic itineraries and urban trekking circuits.
Piazza Umberto I renewed layout will grant a mayor role to this place within an articulated and interrelated system of spaces for outdoor public life, also designed to redefine the relationship between the urban coast and the sea.
